It can take more than 5 min. for a normal Windows PC from pressing the on button to the computer being ready for doing work. As a result, you waste time and people tend not to turn off their computers, thereby wasting a lot of energy at night.

there is a way on laptops, becouse the batery could get empty, he could place the whole memory on the harddisk, so he could totaly be without power. on the next startup he get the memory from the harddisk, so than your laptop is much faster in starting up. My only 2 problem in found with this:
- i could not get it on my pc, while it is a computer of 2 years, so not too old power suply...
- it would be great to make an "image" at one start up, an place that on the harddisk, so he could startup from the memory state of that moment. becouse whenm you place a laptop in sleep mode, he also places much programs in the next startup wich you dont need.

if someone had an solution to make it working on an desktop pc (windows xp proff) and know how to make an "startup memory state image", i would like to hear.

@volgensbatjes.nl. Try updating your Graphic Adapter. Mainly it's the Graphic Adapter who needs to support stand-by (nowadays they do standard). If you have an ATi Graphic Card, try Installing the latest ATi Catalyst Control Center (CCC).

Hey guys, ever heard of the "hibernate" mode? First active it in Control Panel/Power Options under the hibernate-tab. Having done that, when you want to turn the computer off, hit the start key as usual, choose turn off, hit the shift key and press the left most (yellow) button. In a few seconds the computer will be sound asleep without using any power. The contents of your RAM is saved to the harddisk. Next time you turn on the computer the thing will wake up in a jiffy and be ready to go!

You are absolutely right. There was a time, long ago, that we had this problem with televisions, they took minutes to warm up and start. Now you can switch them on instantly. Computers should be like that, they should have been like that already decades ago. The problem is all sorts of unnecessary software that you never use, and takes your valuable time to start up and do nothing afterwards. Software producers don't give a damn about your time, or else they would have made a few lines of trivial software (could have made them decades ago) asking you which software products you need so desparately that you are ready to wait for them every time you start up your computer. Sometimes computers wait for a signal on internet, even if you aren't connected, and they say after 2 minutes; hey, the signal isn't there, o, well... and only then they start. And exactly at that one moment that your attention drops, they ask for your password, wasting even more of your time. That's absoluely unnecessary.
By the way, captain, even the hibernate mode takes more time than it should. What are all these megabytes that need to be stored and recovered on disk? Why can't that go faster?
